FAQs
what will we talk about in our first session?
Sometimes we might talk about the past to understand the patterns in life that we may find ourselves stuck in but that we now find unsatisfying, sometimes the focus is on the present, to think about the obstacles we may face to change, and sometimes the focus is on the future and what we aspire to and aim for.
what if I decide after the assessment session not to continue?
Not everyone who comes to therapy knows what is happening to them, but they understand that 'things aren’t right'. Part of our work together will be to help you make sense of this so you can think about a way forward. The assessment session is a good chance to find out if this is the right place, person and time to do this work.
What about consent and confidentiality?
We will send you information about our terms before the assessment session where we explain about confidentiality. Ensuring confidentiality is vital in the work but there are just a few occasions when we might need to ask for more help. We will always talk with you if we feel we need to speak to others.
what does therapy look like?
Therapy is a safe and confidential place. At the start of therapy we agree a contract which covers things like confidentiality, cost, cancellations etc. The assessment session is about 60 minutes, but we may need to meet more than once to allow us time to gather a full assessment.
Thereafter, we will meet for 50 minutes, on a regular basis, although this can be negotiated. EMDR, couple and family sessions are sometimes longer.
Some people find it helpful to try and improve things for themselves first, there are some good self help worksheets available that you can download here and various organisations that can offer support and advice such as Mind, Hafal, and Unllais.
What about covid 19?
We take your safety very seriously and we will be following government guidance about working safely and what requirements there are for PPE. Before your appointment we will be in touch about what to expect. Read our Covid 19 Policy for face-to-face therapy (PDF download).
